Box Office Report: 'Knight' Won’t Fall
by: Steve Palopoli
Regarding early speculation last week that the stoner comedy Pineapple Express might topple The Dark Knight from its number one box office spot, we can only think of explanation: they must have been high. Actually, Pineapple Express did put up great numbers in its Wednesday night debut, lighting up $12 million. But it dropped 50 percent on Thursday night and never really fully recovered, although its weekend take of $22.4 million should please Sony—with a running total of $40.47 million since its release, it’s made back its production budget of $27 million in less than a week. However, Express failed to reach its preferred destination at number one, thanks to a $26 million performance from The Dark Knight. Christopher Nolan’s sequel is now the first film since Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King in 2003 to hold on to the number one spot at the box office for four consecutive weeks. As of Monday, it had taken in $441 million domestic and $705 million worldwide.
